Los Angeles, CA -- Some of America's best skateboarders are hoping to kick themselves into immortality later this month. On Oct. 30, 20 top skaters will be gathering at the Universal Citywalk in Los Angeles to see who can set the world's record for the longest "ollie" on a flat surface. For those not in the know, an "ollie" is the kick-flip on the back of the skateboard that causes it to go airborne. Skateboarding pro and ollie attempter Brian Patch says the ollie was created in the late 1970s and became "one of those stepping stones that leaves the old generation behind." Since no record has ever been officially set, no one knows exactly how far a skateboarder can ollie, but Patch estimates 12 feet is the mark that will separate the men from the boards. He's preparing by jumping rope before the competition.
