Bone Lengthening Growing Popular In Asia

New York, NY -- Doctors in the U.S. are reporting a bone chilling procedure known as bone lengthening is growing popular in Asia.

It involves breaking, and sometimes sawing, the leg bones, then inserting a medical device akin to a car-jack which is adjusted daily to stretch the bones at a rate of about one millimeter per day.

The procedure is nothing new in the U.S., or in Russia, where it was developed, however, it's becoming a popular procedure with short Asians who want to gain a few inches according to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Elton Strauss of Mt. Sinai in New York.

Dr. Strauss performs the same procedure in the U.S., but on patients who have suffered birth defects such as mismatched legs or dwarfism, or on individuals who have suffered trauma.

He says it's a wonderful treatment for those problems, but questions at what price is the cosmetic advantage worth it for those who don't need the surgery for legitimate medical reasons.
