A Workout For 90-Year-Olds

Bethesda, MD -- Exercise isn't just for young hardbodies: Now, 90-year-olds are being told to feel the burn.

The National Institute on Aging has released an exercise guide for oldsters all the way up to age 100, "Fitness Over Fifty" (Hatherleigh Press).

Of course, the moves aren't exactly the killer ab crunches done by younger gym rats. One exercise helps seniors develop better balance by standing on one foot, then the other while in line at the grocery store.

The guide says these sorts of moves help oldsters prevent themselves from falling, a common problem which can lead to broken hips and other serious injuries.

Other elderly exercises advocated by the Institute include walking briskly, lifting light weights and stretching the wrists by placing the hands together in a prayer position and lifting the elbows until they're parallel to the ground.
