Bloomington, IN -- You say you want an evolution? Well, it can happen much quicker than scientists previously believed. Biologists at Indiana University have discovered sometimes two closely related flowers or animals get together and cause rapid evolutionary changes in a species within a few generations. Biologist Dr. Loren Rieseberg says hybrids have been around for years -- for example, a mule is the sterile offspring of a horse and a donkey -- but thinks scientists haven't considered it when studying evolution since first-generation critters are either sterile or too frail to reproduce. Computer models suggest that if those weird half-hybrids do manage to have kids, their grandchildren are often robust and promote rapid change in the species. Rieseberg figures the discoveries will not only impact biology, it will provide lots of potential material for Science Fiction films. However, while hybrids do happen, Rieseberg says there's no chance humans will "ever become, say, half-sheep."
