Wildlife Hotline Hands Out Squirrely Advice For Homeowners

Silver Spring, MD -- Giving a skunk an eviction notice sounds nuts but it's the squirrely advice a hotline hands out to homeowners with pest problems.

The Fund for Animals in Silver Spring, Maryland, runs a hotline which dispenses alternative, humane advice for ridding a home of pests.

The dog days of summer is the Fund's boom-season for critter calls, says Laura Simon, Urban Wildlife Director.

One of her tips: Hanging rags soaked in ammonia in a fireplace along with blaring loud rock music up the chimney will scare off nesting raccoons.

Also, sprinkling flour on the ground outside a garage is a quiet way to know when a skunk has left the building.

Not all problems can be dealt with passive-aggressive measures, like the woman who needed to get an alligator out of the kitchen.

Simon says cases like that require an animal handler, but the best advice is usually to wait until the critter moves out on its own.
