Attack Of The Killer Tomato-Bell Pepper Hybrids

Los Alamitos, CA -- It seems tomatoes and bell peppers on their own aren't enough to satisfy veggie lovers anymore. A specialty produce company has combined the two in a new hybrid vegetable called the Toma Bella.

After a season of testing harvests of the hybrid, which looks like a tomato-shaped bell pepper, the Los Alamitos, California-based Frieda's is ready to offer it to the public this month.

So what does it taste like?

Reporters who've sampled the Toma Bella say the flavor isn't that different from a regular red bell pepper when you eat it raw but when you cook it, it takes on the texture of a tomato.

A source at Frieda's says the tomato flavor is supposed to emerge as the vegetable ripens, but agrees bell pepper is the dominant taste.
