Poconos, PA -- Benedictine monks in Poconos, Pennsylvania, aren't monkeying around: They're auctioning off the naming rights to their new monastery. The brothers from the Order of St. John The Beloved are turning to unorthodox methods to fund their new headquarters by holding three eBay auctions. Winning bidders get to name various parts of the property, including the church building, retreat center, church grounds and the bell tower. Archbishop Bruce Simpson says after Sept. 11, charitable donations "dropped across the board." They are still seeing a decline so they were forced to turn to eBay to fund the project. The monastery is hoping to reap $3 million by leaving the naming up to bidders, but within reason. Archbishop Simpson says bidders who submit names like "we screw girls" won't be accepted, but monks will "gladly allow" someone to name it after their deceased beloved grandmother.
