|
Asheville, NC -- With war raging in Iraq and the possibility of a new regime taking power, bank note collectors are snapping up the country's currency, the dinar (dih-NAR). According to Audrius Tomonis, who sells several denominations of Iraqi dinars on his website, banknotes.com, bills minted between 1991 and 2002 -- many featuring Saddam Hussein's face -- are going for anywhere from $1 to $5 a pop. Meanwhile, rare, older dinars are priced between $80 and $600. Before the conflict, Tomonis never thought collectors would ever desire dinars, but since he put a collection of them on his website about a month ago, sales have been brisk. Now, he's nearly run out of supplies. He may not be able to get more, either, because his source in Iraq hasn't returned calls ever since war broke out. But the jury is out on whether the dinars will ever be worth anything. Even if Saddam is deposed, Tomonis says many notes would have to be destroyed to make the remaining ones valuable.
