Brooklyn, NY -- The man who inspired Daniel Day-Lewis' villainous (and Oscar-nominated) performance in "Gangs of New York" is getting a gravestone -- 148 years after he was buried. Tomorrow (Feb. 13), the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn will place a granite marker above the underground vault where Bill "The Butcher" Poole has been buried since 1855. Poole was a Nativist who campaigned to keep immigrants out of America, and Martin Scorcese used him as a model for Day-Lewis' "Gangs of New York" character. The release of the film triggered interest in Poole's grave, so now the cemetery is paying for a headstone inscribed with his last words, "Good-bye Boys, I Die A True American." Cemetery president Richard J. Moylan says no one knows why Poole's grave remained unmarked, but they know the exact location from cemetery records. Incidentally, the cemetery is also the final resting spot of other famous folks depicted in "Gangs of New York," including publisher Horace Greeley and politician Boss Tweed.
