American Cars Are In The Innovative Slow Lane

New York, NY -- American autos are stuck in first gear when it comes to car technology -- especially compared to the rest of the world.

That's according to the upcoming issue of "Popular Science" magazine, which features 10 vehicle innovations that can't be found in U.S. cars

For instance, new Saab 9-3 cars driven around London enjoy something called the Traffic Message Channel, which sends up-to-the-minute traffic jam updates via digital radio.

The technology is planned for the U.S., but the infrastructure has yet to be built.

In addition, European drivers are also able to buy the Smart Roadster from Daimler Chrysler -- it has replaceable body panels so drivers can change their car's color on a whim.

Finally, in Japan, a device called Lane-Keep uses cameras to read the lines on the road and sensors to adjust steering and braking so distracted drivers can't ram one another on the road.

Although it works in Japan, an Infiniti spokesman says it won't work in the U.S. unless lane markings are maintained better.
