St. Helena, CA (WFN) -- Americans could soon be sweet on making their own vinegar if a family in Napa Valley has its way. The Karakasevic family in St. Helena, California, not only run their own winery, Domaine Charbay, but they're also make their own vinegar -- and sell it for $28 a bottle. That price may leave a sour taste in your mouth but Susan Karakasevic says it's definitely worth it, thanks to the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes used to mix up the vinegar. In addition, since her family's vinegar is unpasteurized, buyers can produce a whole new batch of the stuff in as little as seven weeks by mixing one-third of a bottle of the vinegar with red wine. Although people have been making their own vinegar for centuries, Susan says we bottled up that knowledge when premade salad dressings became the norm. She hopes that once foodies see how easy it is, homemade vinegar will become as common as herb gardens.
