Elgin, OR (WFN) -- Keiko the whale spent his last days wailing, and died of a broken heart.

Oregon-based animal communicator Bonnie Norton -- who had a telepathic relationship with Keiko -- says the whale preferred being around people, not whales, but didn't understand why he was being pushed away by his trainers.

Norton says she last spoke with Keiko on Nov. 20 but had no idea the whale was just weeks away from death even though he told her, "I keep hoping they will understand before it is too late."

Norton regrets she didn't see the signs but says Keiko had been depressed before. In her words, "One time he even talked about beaching himself but a bunch of us animal communicators talked him out of it."

Although Norton is sad about her friend's death, she plans to use it to convince animal experts that some creatures do want and need to be near humans.
