Los Angeles, CA (WFN) -- A new TV documentary has reconfirmed that it's not what you know, it's who you know in Hollywood that helps you break into showbiz.

Louis Pepe is the co-producer of "Malkovich's Mail," a documentary airing on AMC Dec. 8 which looks at four of the countless scripts that outsiders pitch to actor John Malkovich and his production company, Mr. Mudd Productions.

The subjects in the documentary try everything from drawing elaborate sketches of scenes from the scripts to sending letters making it appear that they have spoken to Malkovich before.

Even Malkovich, who appears in the documentary, says it's tough for him to find open doors for his projects. In his words, "I'm not a Tom Cruise; I'm not a Tom Hanks."

Director Pepe knows what he's talking about. He says he had an in at Mr. Mudd which helped him get the project off the ground.

As futile as it may seem, Pepe says optimism is "the only attitude to have if you are going to break into the film industry."
