Around The Weird: Bizarre News Briefs

Jerusalem, Israel (WFN) -- Israeli customs officials have seized 450 Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein dolls because it is feared the singing, dancing dolls will inflame tensions in an already heated situation.

NELSON, New Zealand -- A New Zealand kitesurfer has won a unique honor from his fellow hobbyists. "Wind And Kite" magazine has awarded Nigel Marsden its coveted "helmet" award for the most unusual method of getting an injury. Marsden suffered a punctured lung after a gust of wind blew him into the air, over his house, and onto his back fence.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A lot of Americans are getting fried on Thanksgiving. According to a survey by LouAna foods, one out of five homes plans to deep-fry a turkey today (Nov. 27) -- a record number.

HAMBURG, Germany -- A German airline is expecting dozens of travelers to take advantage of offer to transport Christmas trees with them on vacation free of charge. A spokeswoman for Hapag-Lloyd says many Germans have holiday homes in the Canary Islands, and many can't imagine celebrating Christmas without a tree. Passengers don't even need to pre-book a reservation for their tree, reports ananova.com.

BRONX, N.Y. -- Wild bears who live on the outskirts of U.S. cities are becoming more and more like their human counterparts -- they're packing on the pounds and doing less exercise. According to a new study by the Bronx Zoo-based Wildlife Conservation Society, black bears are spending less time foraging in the wild and more time chomping on fast food from dumpsters. Scientists are concerned about the animals' health because, as one puts it, "They're hitting the local dumpster for dinner then calling it a day."
