U.S. Mint Pressing Artists For Contributions

Washington, D.C. (WFN) -- Starting today (Nov. 20) the U.S. Mint is beginning to press artists to design new coins.

The Mint is looking for 40 artists -- 20 professional and 20 college/grad students -- to make contributions to designs for coins.

That includes designing legal tender like the quarters for the current 50 State Quarter program and supplying art for commemorative coins and medals.

According to the Mint, this is the first time in its 211-year history that it has invited outside artists to help in the designs.

Director of the U.S. Mint, Henrietta Holsman Fore, says the Mint is, "very interested in new styles or approaches."

That means whether its cubism or pointillism, or, "whether it is three lines, we are interested in it," says Fore.
