|
San Diego, CA (WFN) -- Frankie Avalon sang "Beauty School Dropout" in the 1978 movie musical "Grease" but, these days, he's a drop-in as far as the play is concerned. Avalon spends a few weeks every so often performing the tune in the national touring version of "Grease," and includes a few of his 1950s hits as part of the encore. He likes the gig because it allows him to come in whenever he chooses without the rigors of a regular tour and because, in his words, "For a lot of people, this is their first experience with theater." Amazingly, Avalon almost turned down the role of "Teen Angel," in the movie because the stage version of his character was originally an Elvis Presley-style hiccupper "... and that wasn't my style." Avalon's next stint as a "beauty school drop-in" will during a week-long stint in San Diego, starting Dec. 2.
