Newark, NJ (WFN) -- Old-time radio may be close to death but the man who gave the world the "Pina Colada Song" is doing his best to give it CPR. Rupert Holmes will be appearing at the 28th Annual Friends Of Old Time Radio Convention, a three-day event celebrating the days when radio dramas filled the air. Sadly, it's been at least 40 years since the last old time radio drama was broadcast on a network and it has become what Holmes describes as "an endangered species." It's endangered in more ways than one. Since many of the original radio voices from the 1930s and 1940s are dying off, the number of experienced radio actors is dropping at a steady pace. But Holmes refuses to let it die. He tried to revive it by creating the mid-1990s cable TV series, "Remember WENN," and he uses radio drama any chance he can. For instance, Holmes put a long scene featuring an old broadcast in his George Burns play "Say Goodnight, Gracie," and he says, "It always gets the biggest laughs because people can fill in the details with their own pictures." The Old Time Radio Convention takes place Oct. 23-26 in Newark, New Jersey.
