New Brunswick, NJ (WFN) -- Folks attending the New Jersey Pest Management Association's 56th Educational Clinic tomorrow (Aug. 21) will be in for some mouth-watering fun. Clinic organizers are holding New Jersey's first-ever Cricket Spitting Contest in lieu of their normal cockroach derby. Organizer Len Douglen says participants will be trying to break the World's Record set in 2002 at Purdue University's Bug Bowl: 37-feet, 9.75-inches for men; and 28-feet, 2.25-inches for women. Douglen expects about 15 folks to cram a frozen and "slightly thawed" brown house cricket in his or her mouth and spit it. According to the rules, no part of cricket is allowed to show before the spitter spits. Experts will also lecture on topics like pest control, pesticides and public health, but Douglen says holding events like cricket spitting contests is the only way to get to media to pay attention.
