Murrietta, CA -- More and more Americans are saying, "so long" to the salon and cutting their own hair instead.

And they're doing a better job than any barber or stylist.

That's just one of the cutting remarks made by salon owner Steven Woodham, who runs the www.haircutkit.com website.

He says cutting hair is a skill like golf or guitar that takes a little effort to learn but gets easier the more you practice -- especially on yourself.

Woodham says many of the best haircuts he's seen were done by family members or "solo artists" and says, "They get to see the head of hair everyday and get to know it extremely well."

But Woodham's not worried that the increase in home haircuts will put him out of business. In fact, he thinks it will do the opposite, since there are some things a person can only tell their hairstylist.

Plus, Woodham says the more people understand haircut basics, the more likely they can tell the barber what they want.
