Los Angeles, CA -- Legendary second banana Ed McMahon is doing something he's hasn't done since Johnny Carson retired from "The Tonight Show" in 1992 -- co-hosting a late-night talk show.

He'll be swapping his trademark "Heeeere's Johnny" for a "Heeeere's Jimmy" as sideman to Jimmy Kimmel on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" all next week (May 19-23).

McMahon is really looking forward to returning to the second banana slot, and thinks the audience will enjoy seeing him again.

In his words, "I think they're going to want to know what Ed McMahon looks like, to begin with -- they haven't seen me maybe for a while -- and they want to see me in that role again."

The original late night sidekick says he's sure folks will be curious to see how he fares with Jimmy as compared to Johnny, but he feels it's basically the same role: Be there when the host needs you, be out of the way when he doesn't.

"That's the secret to a good second banana," McMahon says.
