Youngstown, OH -- Women aren't going to like this: An Ohio psychology professor says there's no such thing as PMS. Sure, women can suffer cramps and bloating, but all the crying and angry outbursts can't be blamed on the menstrual cycle, says Youngstown State University professor Stephen Flora. Along with a female student, Flora has analyzed research on PMS and concluded that the monthly "syndrome" is more a matter of social conditioning than a real medical condition. The proof comes from studies like the one that shows women don't report PMS symptoms until they are shown videos on the topic. Another study found women who are particularly aggressive during their period are just as aggressive at other times of the month. Flora's PMS-debunking article will appear in the May/June issue of "Skeptical Inquirer" magazine, and he says he's already getting complaints from women. However, he's also received praise from a female physician.
