Robert Cray: Blues Sitar Player

San Francisco, CA (WFN) -- Guitar legend Robert Cray is picking a new instrument these days -- the electric "sitar."

Cray, best known for his mid-80s hit, "Smokin' Gun," is about to release a new CD that features the sitar on some tunes instead of his trademark six-string axe.

It wasn't Cray's idea. He credits the sitar suggestion to keyboardist Jim Pugh, who thought it would sound great on a song called "Up In The Sky."

Cray managed to dig one up and string together a solo for the song. In fact, it was so good that he is planning to take it along with him on his upcoming nationwide tour.

Don't expect Cray to give up his regular guitar. He says the electric sitar isn't as versatile and he only plans to use it for one song, "otherwise, I'd have to cover a song by the Boxtops."

"Time Will Tell" hits stores July 1.
