Los Angeles, CA -- It's a good thing for Starbucks that the U.S. is no longer under British rule. According to a Los Angeles-based art collector, coffee houses were officially banned 328 years ago. Jeff Cane's company, Great Forgeries, produces facsimiles of historical artwork and documents and he claims to have uncovered a document dating back to December 1675 in which then-king Charles XI officially banned coffee houses. According to the document, the coffeehouses were banned because they "produced very evil and dangerous effects," and those that ran them were to "receive the severest punishment that may by Law be inflicted. Cane says he discovered the document in a book he purchased and was amazed, considering the proliferation of coffee houses today. Since his business is reproducing documents, he says he plans to replicate the coffee decree, with the goal of getting them sold in Starbucks stores.
