Los Angeles, CA -- A caravan of travelers is planning to get some kicks on Route 66 next month. Starting April 29, a caravan of road warriors will leave Santa Monica, California, and travel across Route 66 in 66 days -- ending their journey in Chicago. Jim Conkle, a Route 66 historian who made his first trek across the highway more than 40 years ago, will lead the group. Route 66's stretch of 2,400 miles was most popular from the 1920s to 1960s, but Conkle admits this trip won't be as grueling as it was for the Joads in "The Grapes of Wrath." However, he says, "we might turn off the air conditioner to make ourselves suffer." The caravan will make stops at attractions like the Big Texan Restaurant, where if you can polish off a 76-ounce steak you eat for free; and Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, where the milkshakes are so thick they're served upside down. Also, along the way, troopers will post "Roadside Attraction" signs to notify other travelers of these historic hotspots.
