San Francisco, CA (WFN) -- What's good for the goose isn't quite good enough for the gander where Botox is concerned.

According to a new study by a University of British Columbia dermatologist that was sponsored by Botox's manufacturer, men need about twice as much of the muscle paralyzing cosmetic agent than women to achieve the same, wrinkle-free effect.

In the study, 80 men were given various amounts of Botox to combat their frown lines and were examined after one year to see how they fared.

Those who had anywhere from 40 to 80 units of Botox -- twice the amount typically needed to smooth out a woman's facial lines -- reported the best results.

Dr. Alastair Carruthers says the increased amount needed is due to the greater muscle tone and thickness of men's skin.

Men currently comprise 15 percent of all Botox patients.
