	2003-01-14 - Weird News Wireless Flash News Spyro Gyra Leader: 'I Hated Our Band Name!'

New York, NY (WFN) -- The jacuzzi jazz group Spyro Gyra has been around almost 30 years and its name has been butchered since the beginning. Band leader Jay Beckenstein says people always screw up the name -- especially in Europe where everyone either calls them "Spyro Yira" or "Spyri Gira." Beckenstein says the real spelling, "Spirogira," was first butchered by a club owner as "Spyro Gyra" at their first show under that name. However, after that fateful show, the fans knew them for that name -- which Beckenstein had used just because they needed a name but ended up hating. After that, lots of people came to their shows thinking they played greek music and some would show up at concerts and ask "which one of you is Spyra and which one of you is Gyra." Still, Beckenstein says he learned to love the name, but only after they sold their first million records. Spyro Gyra's new CD "Original Cinema," hits stores February 25.
