Dave Grohl Calls Foo Fighters The Grunge Rock Wings

New York, NY -- After battling for Nirvana's catalog, one thing Dave Grohl isn't fighting is the Foo Fighters' legacy -- he's resigned that the band will be grunge's version of Paul McCartney's Wings.

Grohl tells October's "Spin" magazine he realizes Nirvana "touched so many people's lives" but has no illusions that Foo Fighters will do the same thing.

According to Grohl, "It doesn't make sense to imagine that happening twice in your life."

Grohl backs that with this analogy: "The Beatles were f*cking great. But Wings didn't change the world. They had great music and great songs, but Jesus Christ, y'know?"

Still, it looks like Grohl doesn't consider his place in history secure even with Nirvana, saying, "Dude, I was like their sixth drummer. When I think of Nirvana, I think of Krist and Kurt. I was just the drummer."

The October issue of "Spin" hits the stands Oct. 8.
