Hot Dog Eating Champ Trains Hard, Doesn't Get Gas
New York, NY -- America's hot dog eating champion is training hard to beat the world champ -- even if it gives him gas.
The 87th annual Nathan's Famous world hot dog eating contest takes place July 4 in New York and U.S. champ Eric Booker has been training by eating "lots of cabbage" to expand his stomach.
Luckily, the cabbage hasn't given him bad gas, like it does to other chowhounds who enjoy the combustive veggie.
However, George Shea, co-president of the International Federation for Competitive Eating, believes all the tummy training could be in vain because, as he says, "it's not like a man can go from 30 hot dogs to eating 50" -- which is the current world's record held by Japan's Takeru Kobayashi.
Even Booker -- whose personal best is 28 -- admits he probably won't win if Kobayashi is in full form, but he says the Japanese champ has been known to have "off" days.
If that happens, he says the title is his.
