New York, NY -- "Spider-Man" cutie Kirsten Dunst used to be a real dunce.

The actress tells gossip reporter Baird Jones that when she was in second grade, all the kids called her "Kirsten Dunce" and said, "Duh" all the time whenever she walked by.

Kirsten's mother tried to help by explaining that the last name means "fog" in German but that only made matters worse.

Her classmates bellowed out fog horn noises instead.

Eventually, Kirsten learned from her mistakes and started telling folks that "Dunst" really means "mist," which she says is "more romantic sounding."

"Spider-Man" swings into theaters tomorrow (May 3).
