| 2002-02-21 - Weird News Wireless Flash News Phil Ramone Doubts 'Moulin Rouge' Will Bring Back Musicals | ||
|
New York, NY -- "Moulin Rouge" may be the first musical up for Best Picture since "Fame" in 1980 -- but some music insiders doubt it will bring back the old musicals at all. Producer Phil Ramone -- who has produced Frank Sinatra, Elton John and Bob Dylan -- says old-fashioned musicals are dead because modern audiences can't relate to people singing and dancing out of nowhere. Despite "Moulin Rouge's" Oscar nominations, Ramone doubts future filmmakers will attempt musicals -- except for biographies about famous musicians where the songs are part of concert sequences. Ramone will discuss music and film work on "The Score," an arts program debuting March 3 on the Trio cable network. In addition, he's a Grammy nominee for Best Musical Show Album for "Seussical: The Musical."
