Cheerios Celebrating 60 Years Of Cereal

Golden Valley, NY (WFN) -- If you feel like sowing your oats, Monday (Oct. 1) will be a good day to do it.

That's because October marks the 60th anniversary of Cheerios cereal, which was introduced to shoppers in 1941.

Food scientists at General Mills experimented with more than 500 recipes and 10 different shapes and sizes before finally settling on the now-familiar "O-shape."

In the beginning, Cheerios were called "Cheerioats" but the name was changed in 1945 after complaints by rival Quaker Oats.
