Chop Suey Celebrates 105th Anniversary

Wellesley, MA (WFN) -- Today (Aug. 29) is a tasty anniversary for Chinese food fans -- chop suey was invented 105 years ago.

Chop suey -- which basically means "cut into small pieces" was invented on August 29, 1896, by the chef of a Chinese ambassador who was visiting New York.

These days, it's practically impossible to find chop suey because most Asian chefs consider it to be the "Spaghetti-Os of Chinese cuisine."

However, Food Network chef Ming Tsai says chop suey deserves a little respect for inspiring westerners to try more authentic Asian dishes like Peking Duck, sushi and Thai food.

Still, he considers it a personal point of pride that he has never cooked chop suey even once in his life.
