Columbia, MO (WFN) -- A Missouri artist is launching a project which will attempt to paint the moon red.

Artist James Downey wants to create a huge red spot on the moon by getting millions of people to aim laser pointers at a specific spot on the moon on the evening of October 27.

He says laser light can travel great distances, so he figures it could shine far enough to reach the moon.

Downey admits his plan has already been pooh-poohed by physicists and astronomers, but he intends to push forward with the collaborative art effort.

He's already had thousands of hits on his website, painthtemoon.org, and he claims he's heard from several people who are planning parties around the event.
