Statistics Prove Most Italians Aren't Mobsters

Washington (WFN) -- An Italian-American activist group wants people to know most Italian-Americans are nothing like the characters on "The Sopranos" -- and they've got the statistics to prove it.

The hit HBO mob drama will have its season premiere on Sunday (Mar. 4) and the National Italian American Foundation feels the show unfairly stereotypes Americans of Italian descent as dumb criminals.

The group's research shows that less than 6 percent of the criminals on the FBI's most wanted list in the past 50 years have been of Italian descent and two-thirds of Italian-Americans are well-educated white collar workers.

A spokeswoman says the organization resents the stereotypes and wishes the entertainment industry would stop portraying Italians "...with either a fork or a .45 in their hand."
