Among the 33.4% of currently sexually active students nationwide, 25.6% had used alcohol or drugs at last sexual intercourse. Male students (30.9%) were significantly more likely than female students (20.7%) to have used alcohol or drugs at last sexual intercourse. This significant sex difference was identified for white and black students and students in grades 10, 11, and 12.

Overall, white and Hispanic students (27.8% and 24.1%, respectively) were significantly more likely than black students (17.8%) to have used alcohol or drugs at last sexual intercourse, and this significant racial/ethnic difference was identified for female students. Prevalence ranged from 20.2% to 33.5% (median: 24.9%) across state surveys and from 13.5% to 26.4% (median: 18.3%) across local surveys.
