Nationwide, 22.1% of students had smoked a whole cigarette before age 13 years. Male students (24.5%) were significantly more likely than female students (19.8%) to have smoked a whole cigarette before age 13 years.

Overall, white and Hispanic students (23.6% and 22.6%, respectively) were significantly more likely than black students (14.2%) to have smoked a whole cigarette before age 13 years. This significant racial/ethnic difference was identified for both female and male students.

Overall, students in grade 9 (26.2%) were significantly more likely than students in grades 11 and 12 (18.5% and 19%, respectively) to have smoked a whole cigarette before age 13 years. Across state surveys, prevalence ranged from 12.2% to 28.1% (median: 23%). Prevalence across local surveys ranged from 11.1% to 21.2% (median: 17.3%).
