Nationwide, 5% of students had used illegal steroids (i.e., without a doctor's prescription) during their lifetime (i.e., lifetime steroid use).

Overall, male students (6%) were significantly more likely than female students (3.9%) to report lifetime steroid use. This significant sex difference was identified for white students and students in grade 12.

Overall, white students (5.3%) were significantly more likely than black students (3.2%) to report lifetime steroid use. This significant racial/ethnic difference was identified for female students. Prevalence of lifetime illegal steroid use varied threefold from 2.6% to 6.9% (median: 5%) across state surveys and ranged from 2.3% to 5.7% (median: 4.5%) across local surveys.
