Judges, magistrates, and magistrate judges held 27,000jobs in 2002, primarily in State and local government. Administrative law judges, adjudicators, and hearing officers held about 19,000 jobs; 57 percent worked in State governments, 24 percent in the Federal Government, and 16 percent in local governments. Arbitrators, mediators, and conciliators held another 6,100 jobs. Approximately half worked for State and local governments. The remainder worked for labor organizations, law offices, insurance carriers, and other private companies and for organizations that specialize in providing dispute resolution services.
