Almost 30 percent of medical scientists were employed in scientific research and development services firms, another 24 percent worked in Government, 14 percent in pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing, 13 percent in private hospitals, and most of the remainder worked in private educational services and ambulatory health care services. About 1,000 were self-employed. Among epidemiologists, nearly 45 percent were employed in Government, another 20 percent worked in management, scientific, and technical consulting services firms, 14 percent in private hospitals, and 12 percent in scientific research and development services firms.
