Employment

The air transportation industry provided 559,000 wage and salary jobs in 2002. Most employment is found in larger establishments—nearly 2out of 3 jobs are in establishments with 1,000 or more workers. However, nearly three-fourths of all establishments employ fewer than 20 workers (chart).

Most air transportation jobs are at major airports located close to cities. A substantial proportion are at airports that serve as central hubs for major airlines.
